THE number of local people out of work and claiming benefits dropped by more than one per cent last month, according to the government’s latest figures.
The Department of Employment’s December Labour Market Report reveals that during November the borough’s jobless total stood at 2,132 - 1,518 men and 614 women. That represented a decrease of 1.3 per cent (27 people) from the previous month, but a rise of 4.6 per cent (94 people) over the past year.
The percentage of the borough’s working age population out of work and claiming unemployment benefits now stands at 4 per cent - the ninth lowest of Northern Ireland’s 26 council areas.
Across the province, the seasonally adjusted number of people claiming unemployment related benefits stood at 60,900 in November - up 300 (0.5 per cent) from the revised figure for the previous month.
