DUP councillor Nigel Hamilton has confirmed that he will not be standing for re-election on May 5.
The announcement came just days after a Sunday newspaper published allegations about his personal life.
It was thought the Glengormley man may run as an independent if he was withdrawn as a candidate by the party following the claims about his private life. However, after a meeting with senior DUP officials at party headquarters last Wednesday (April 6), he decided to remain a member of the party, but not to seek re-election.
Alderman Hamilton, who was elected to Newtownabbey Council in 2001 and quickly became one of the borough’s most outspoken councillors, was replaced as a candidate in the Antrim Line area by Audrey Ball (pictured)- the wife of DUP alderman Billy Ball.
