A SUSPECT device closed Newtownabbey roads for the third night in a row on Thursday night (February 28).

Police closed the O’Neill Road between the Old Irish Highway and Knockenagh Avenue following a report of a suspicious object in the area just before midnight.

No homes were evacuated while army bomb experts examined the device and roads were reopened around 2.40am after the object was declared an elaborate hoax.

This was the third security alert in the area in as many nights.

On Wednesday evening a suspicious object was left at the home of two DUP councillors.

Residents were forced out of their homes for a number of hours while the army dealt with the device.

And on Tuesday, Police had to close the Shore Road between the Doagh Road and Hazelbank Park to examine an object.

All were subsequently declared elaborate hoaxes.
