MOURNERS gathered in Ballyclare’s Grange Estate on Saturday morning (November 26) for the funeral of local man, Johnston Todd.

The 43-year-old, who had been a talented amateur boxer in his day, passed away suddenly last Wednesday (November 23) at his home in Grange Drive.

Paying tribute to her late son, Mr Todd’s mother, Agnes said: “Four of my five sons were boxers, but Johnston was probably the best. He was a very good boxer and everyone liked him.”

Ballyclare’s former Ulster and Ireland light-middleweight champion, Henry Turkington, added: “Johnston was a pretty good boxer and I know he won a few titles. He was a southpaw who could certainly punch a bit.

“I didn’t go to watch many fights, but I remember going to see him fight in Monkstown one night and he was very impressive.”

Mr Todd was laid to rest at Rashee Cemetery.
