Children across Newtownabbey are invited to set sail on a voyage of discovery into the wonderful world of library books, by taking part in the Titanic Reading Voyage during the summer holidays.
Libraries NI is inviting all children, aged 4 and over, to get on board this year’s reading challenge, the Titanic Reading Voyage, and discover a wealth of excitement in all local libraries and mobile libraries.
For the first time Libraries NI is offering its own ‘in house’ challenge when children are invited to challenge themselves to read any number of books (between 2 and 25). Children are also being asked to encourage their mum and dad, grandparent or other adult to participate in the Titanic Reading Voyage, by setting their own number of books to read over the holidays.
On ‘joining the voyage’ every child/adult will receive a Boarding Pass which will be stamped each time they read a book and they will also receive a Titanic Reading Voyage wristband to wear! Each child/adult who achieves his or her personal goal will be awarded a First Class certificate, at the end of their reading journey.
Fun activities including word searches, puzzles and colouring sheets will be available in libraries and there will also be a programme of free events including drama workshops and author visits.
Valerie Christie, Children’s Services Manager with Libraries NI explained: “This scheme has proved to be a successful way of getting children to read in their spare time, during the school holidays. Last year over 8,700 children across Northern Ireland registered for the Summer Reading Challenge and for 2012, as adults are also being invited to sign up, we hope to have a record number of people taking part.
“The Reading Voyage is also a great opportunity to introduce newcomers to the wealth of fun available in libraries. This year we are delighted to link the challenge to our own Titanic story and offer a host of Titanic-themed events and activities to support it.”
The Titanic Reading Voyage is just one of many exciting schemes that Libraries NI presently offers, to encourage children to love reading. Children aged 4 and over are invited to call into any local library and sign up to the Titanic Reading Voyage today! There is no charge and admission to related summer events is free.
