NEWTOWNABBEY Borough Council is turning to social media in an effort to keep local householders informed about any service disruptions over the winter months.

Residents are being encouraged to check the council website and follow @NewtownabbeyBC on Twitter to receive up to the minute updates on disruptions to services affected by extreme weather conditions.

“With Twitter accessible at home via your computer, tablet, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 as well as on the move through any internet enabled mobile phone, it’s never been easier to stay informed about what’s happening in the borough,” a spokesperson for the local authority explained.

“The updates on Twitter can be used in conjunction with the website to remain in the know. Stay informed with the News feed, watch videos and listen to the podcasts which are ideal for anyone who prefers information in audio format. An online bin checker helps make sure you’ll never miss a Christmas bin collection again. Simply look up your street name and it’ll tell you when to leave out your kerbie boxes and bins.

“There’s also information to help you prepare for winter; watch online videos on how to protect your water pipes from freezing, find out what to do if they freeze or burst, get advice on preparing your car and driving over the winter period and find out about the council’s oil stamp saving scheme,” she said.

Mayor Victor Robinson added: “Following the council on Twitter really is the best way to stay informed over the winter months as it’s quick and easy. You don’t need to be a technical genius; all you need is an internet connection on your phone or computer. Combined with our website, the online services will help make sure no one gets caught out this winter.”
