Mallusk residents demand answers about waste plant

MALLUSK Community Action Group has called on local political representatives to ‘come clean’ about plans to build an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant less than two miles from their village.

It’s understood the plant, which would burn waste that cannot be recycled under strictly controlled conditions to produce electricity, is being proposed for the Hightown area, possibly at a site on the Boghill Road.

Following a recent meeting with officials from Newtownabbey Borough Council and Arc 21 - the umbrella waste management group for the 11 councils in the east of Northern Ireland - representatives from Mallusk Community Action Group (MCAG) have raised serious concerns about the plans for what they view as “a waste incinerator.”

The residents, who already live with ongoing problems created by the Baird’s Brae landfill site, say they feel “angry and let down” that they have been “met by a wall of silence”.
