Tesco Newtownabbey at Abbey Retail Park has appointed Maria O’Prey its Community Champion.

She will be visiting schools, groups and clubs over the coming months to decide where the retailer can help community projects and charities in the local area.

Maria has worked for Tesco for three years and will be building up valuable links around Newtownabbey to support community organisations with time, fundraising and donations.

The store receives a charity budget every year and it is Maria who carefully decides how this budget can be used to support local causes. She is already thinking about which activities, competitions and prizes the supermarket can support in 2014.

“My job is fantastic. I love interacting with everyone and being able to make such a difference in our vibrant community,” she said.

Maria is usually in store between 11am and 4.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, much of her time is spent playing an active role out in the community. She is often helping out at local school fetes, coffee mornings and charity raffles.

“As well as organising charity bag packing days in store, I try to participate in community events as often as possible, provide gifts for raffles or pop along to nearby events as a helper. I’m really proud that we’ve raised so much money for our Charity of the Year in 2013, Diabetes UK, as well as being so strongly involved with other charities. I look forward to working with many more people this year,” she added.
