A group of super slimmers in Monkstown have dropped a whopping 2,505kgs in weight - the weight of a brand new BMW X5 series car.

Joanne Carter, local Slimming World consultant, visited the Bavarian BMW dealership on Belfast’s Boucher Road to see for herself the sheer size of the slimmers’ achievement.

All together, the members of the Thursday Monkstown Slimming World groups based at Nortel Social Club are now 394 stone lighter than they were when Joanne re-launched the groups back in May, just over seven months ago.

Joanne commented: “Reaching this milestone as a group just proves the huge change that we’ve all made to our lives.

“It’s brilliant to celebrate losing the weight of a BMW car together as a group because that’s how we’ve been losing weight, together.

“Every week we support and encourage members, share tips and recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun.

“The support and inspiration that members get from each other has also been integral to our success as a group.”

The 200 plus members who attend the groups every week follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages members to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg.

Joanne, who has lost over four stone herself, says: “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hungry.

“Before I joined Slimming World I thought losing weight meant counting calories and eating rabbit food.

“But now I know it’s about making healthier choices about food and becoming a bit more active.”

The current groups in Monkstown have been so successful that Joanne has re-launched the Tuesday Monkstown Slimming World Group, held weekly in the Church of the Good Shepherd, off Cashel Drive.

The group will meet on Tuesdays in the church at 5.30pm or 7.30pm.

Joanne adds: “Slimming has never been more important, as 62 per cent of people in Northern Ireland are overweight.

“At this time of year weight is such a worry for so many of us. It affects how we feel, our happiness and wellbeing.

“Those of us who are overweight know we ought to do something about it, but many of us just don’t know where to turn for help.

“We beat ourselves up, feeling guilty about our weight and increasingly our children’s weight too.

“It’s the lucky ones who find Slimming World and discover a world of empathy, compassion and warmth and a real solution. Food Optimising is a great eating plan and nothing is excluded.

“I would encourage everyone who is struggling with a weight problem to come along and join Slimming World”.
