New hospital unit to open next spring

THE Northern Health Trust has confirmed that the new Emergency Department at Antrim Area Hospital is on course to open in spring 2013.

The state-of-the-art facility, which has been much-needed since the closure of the A&E departments at the Whiteabbey and Mid Ulster Hospitals, has been designed to provide emergency care to 90,000 patients per year.

Welcoming the continuing progress on the development, Trust Chairman Jim Stewart said: “The design of the new unit will improve the patient’s flow and experience through the Emergency Department, providing a safe and secure working environment for staff and visitors.”

The new Emergency Department will include a reception area; Triage, Minors (Adult & Paediatrics), Majors (Adult & Paediatrics); Resus area; designated rooms for gynaecology, neck and head injuries; an X-ray suite and isolation facilities plus a full range of supporting accommodation.
