Pupils build towards success

Belfast’s w5 science and discovery centre was the venue for the seventh annual competition.

The team from Ballyclare High School picked up a Consistent Performance Award with the assistance of mentors Thomas Elliot, Niamh O’Hare and Jack Mooney from Caterpillar NI and teacher Dr Paul Wilson.

The competition was part of a world challenge involving more than 250,000 children, aged from nine to 16 years, from over 80 countries.

Sixteen teams from across Northern Ireland worked with a team coach or “STEM ambassador” mentors from sponsoring companies to build, test, and programme an autonomous robot using “Lego Minmstorms” to solve a set of missions in a robot game.

The winning school was Victoria College.

Victoria College has been invited to take part in the national final at Loughborough University in February, with the winner competing in the world Lego League Challenge festival in St Louis, USA.
