Spring is upon us, the snowdrops are finished, the daffodils are in the shops – the first lambs have appeared in the fields and the nights are lengthening.

Looking out of my window this morning it doesn’t feel much like spring with a sluggish mist hugging the coastline and me still hugging coat, hat and scarf when dog walking of an evening! Isn’t that exactly how we feel sometimes – sluggish. It’s not always easy to shake off those winter blues, or to put the past behind us. We just want to curl up, hibernate – make the world go away! Let me assure you this is not a physical or even mental problem – it is a spiritual problem. What you need is a spot of “Spiritual Spring Cleaning”. Here are a few tips:

1) Get Spiritually Healthy: Cleanse your heart. The Bible encourages us to draw close to God and allow our hearts and bodies to be cleansed. Psalm 51:10 says “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

2) Throw out the Junk – Renew your mind: just as junk food is bad for the body, junk food is bad for the mind – feed your mind and spirit with the things of God. Romans 12:2 says “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

3) Repent from Sin - Hidden sin will destroy your life, your peace, and even your health. The Bible says to confess your sin - tell someone, and reach out for help. Hebrews 12:1 says “Therefore ... let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress.”

4) Get rid of Old Baggage: Release Unforgiveness and Bitterness - Any sin weighs us down, but long held unforgiveness and bitterness clings, lingers. It’s so familiar we forget it’s there. Ephesians 4:31-32 says “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Remember spiritual spring cleaning lasts for eternity! May I wish you all God’s richest blessing for your ‘Spring Cleaning’.
