Pastor’s Pen: Don’t let fear take control of your life

By Mary HendersonA little boy had to walk each evening past a dark, spooky house. He was terrified. Full of fear as you can imagine.

Some adult friends tried to give him courage to take away his fear. One handed him a good-luck charm. Another installed a light at a particularly dark corner near the house. A third took a different approach, saying: “It’s sinful to be afraid – trust in God.” Advice, but still not much help to the little boy. Then one friend said with compassion: “I know what it’s like to be afraid. I’ll walk with you past the house.” Instantly the child’s fears were gone.

There is good and bad fear. We speak about healthy fear which we associate with caution. We see danger in some form or shape and become afraid so hopefully we retreat or seek help.

However, fear is one such emotion that each of us experience. It can cripple us and distort our view of the plans that God has for us. Jeremiah says: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “……. not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29 v11)

Perhaps the giant you are facing at this moment is that of fear. Fear of rejection, failing health, financial collapse, future, being alone, death itself and the ultimate ‘eternity’.

Fear will try and convince you that you are not safe in God’s hands and that He is not able to take control of your fears.

Perhaps you have tried everything to eliminate your fear(s) but to no avail.

Take confidence because “with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19 v 25-26)

Fear can make us feel worthless. However, Jesus himself said “don’t be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10v31)

Don’t let fear take full control or prevent you from doing the will of God. Let God into your life and take control. Trust and Obey Him as that is the only way. In so doing you will have God Himself walking with you every step of the way, revealing His wonderful plan, giving you hope and a future like the prophet Jeremiah said.
