Memorial garden bench honour for veteran Newtownabbey councillor

The Ulster Unionist representative was first elected to former Newtownabbey Borough Council in 1980, where he served as mayor in 1990/91 and again in 2013/14. He also served as deputy mayor in both 1989/90 and 2012/13.

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery, who joined Ald Agnew in unveiling the bench, said: “It is a privilege to be here today and mark this momentous milestone. Fraser has faithfully served this borough for more than 40 years and I am delighted that we have been able to acknowledge his commitment to public service.

“The fact that he was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in 2007 and a Member of the British Empire in 2015 is testament to his dedication to the Borough.”

“A keen historian, Fraser was the driving force behind the design and installation of the memorial trench at Mossley Mill and so the location of his bench is a fitting tribute to his vision and devotion to the memory of the fallen.”

Speaking at the unveiling, Ald Agnew said: “It has been a privilege to serve on this council for more than half of my life and I am honoured that my colleagues have chosen to mark my service in such an appropriate way.

“This trench and memorial garden is a special place for me and I delighted that I will be able to come here and enjoy the area from my own dedicated seat.”
