Newtownabbey teacher to bid emotional farewell after 35 years

The outgoing principal at Hazelwood Integrated Primary and Nursery School, Mrs Patricia Murtagh, will be stepping down from her role this month after a 35-year teaching career at the Whitewell Road school.

Mrs Murtagh, who has served as principal for 10 years and as vice principal before that, started teaching at Hazelwood in 1985 when it was one of only two integrated primary schools in Northern Ireland.

The school, situated in what was then a simmering interface area on the edge of north Belfast, has experienced highs and lows over the last three and a half decades, but Mrs Murtagh, who will say her goodbyes to the pupils tomorrow (Friday), has loved her time at the school.

Speaking to this newspaper, she said: “When I started in 1985, there was only Hazelwood and Forge Integrated Primary. The concept of integrated education was a new one and over the years the movement has grown and things have changed in Northern Ireland for the better.

“I believe that integrated schools have played their part in these positive changes and have helped to create a mutual respect.

“Pupils would have been aware of the shootings and bombings during the Troubles. Theses issues were used as a stimulus for conversations in class and this helped to break down barriers and create a mutual respect.

“The children were aware of their differences and by talking about the issues, it helped to develop the respect. North Belfast experienced difficulties and we lost parents, relatives and past pupils during the Troubles. This would be the low point of my time at the school.

“Today’s Northern Ireland is a different place and issues such as supporting minority groups and protecting the environment are now part of the conversations that pupils are having.

“We are preparing the children for adult life and are encouraging them to be good citizens.”

The Carryduff resident continued: “I have enjoyed working with the head teachers from nearby schools. Although our ethos may be a little different, we all want the best for the young people in our care and they are at the heart of everything we do as educators.

“Hazelwood has a good reputation and we are always over subscribed. It is very affirming to see former students bringing their children to be taught here. The school will always be in my heart.

“I will be finishing next Friday and it will be a very emotional time. Due to Covid-19, I’ll not be able to hug the pupils when I say my goodbyes and our special assemblies and events have had to be curtailed. In the current climate, nothing can be done. People’s health is priority and due to the seriousness of the coronavirus, the restrictions have to be adhered to.”

The school’s Board of Governors has invited applications for the post of Principal. The new head teacher is due to take up the role in April.

Vice Principal, Mr McDaid, will take up the role of Acting Principal following Mrs Murtagh’s retirement.

Mrs Murtagh added: “Mr McDaid has been a colleague of mine for a number of years and I wish him every success in taking the school forward.

“I wish to thank the Governors, fellow teaching colleagues and support staff, the parents, pupils and Hazelwood community for the support I have had during my time here. I really am going to miss it all.

“There have been many positive times during my time at the school. The many special assemblies and successes we have celebrated together and seeing the children develop has been a huge part of my life.

“Children would have brought pieces of their work to show me in my office and it always put a smile on my face. It’s great to share these moments with the pupils.

“I have a lovely new grandson and I am looking forward to spending time with him. He brings so much joy. I will also take time to follow my hobbies. I wish the Hazelwood community all the best for the future.”
