Special council meeting in tribute to Prince Philip

Three committee meetings scheduled by the local authority for this week have been cancelled.

Flags on council buildings will be flown at half-mast during the period of mourning.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Mayor Councillor Jim Montgomery has paid tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh on his sad passing.

The Mayor said: “The life of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, was one filled with service. Born into the turmoil of a Europe still reeling from the Great War, he found sanctuary and stability in the United Kingdom.

“As a young naval officer, his record was exemplary but his greatest service to our nation was undoubtedly as consort, companion and confidante to Her Majesty the Queen.

“His love of adventure and the outdoors led him to establish the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Founded in 1956, the scheme has taught millions of young people worldwide valuable lessons about volunteering and well-being and teamwork and today it stands as a proud legacy to him.

“The scale of his service is near impossible to quantify. Countless charitable and public engagements, hosting and visiting world leaders but all the time, faithful and mindful that his Monarch must enjoy a prominence great than his own.

“It is unfortunate during these times that we are unable to mark this solemn occasion with any form of public gathering. On behalf of the people of Antrim and Newtownabbey, I have opened an online Book of Condolence for people to leave any personal messages or tributes and these will be gathered and conveyed in an appropriate manner.

“I am sure like me, people will remember his service with pride and pray that God will grant Her Majesty the comfort and strength to bear the loss of her true companion and servant.”
