Special meeting to consider revised Dog Control Orders

A SPECIAL meeting of Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Environment Committee will take place on Monday afternoon (October 29) to discuss plans to introduce new Dog Control Orders.

The controversial proposals, which could see pet owners hit with fines for allowing dogs off the lead in public places such as playing fields, recreation grounds and certain areas of parks, have divided opinion between those who believe dogs need places to exercise off the lead, and those who feel dogs being allowed to run free are a nuisance to other park users.

At their September committee meeting, councillors agreed to hold separate meetings for each District Electoral Area to allow members to raise issues of concern regarding particular parks.

Following the discussions, council officers have come up with a number of amended Dog Control Orders that members will be asked to consider at Monday’s special meeting before the revised proposals go out to public consultation.
