THE brutal murder of Michaela McAreavey is said to have shocked and saddened everyone at Glengormley GAA club, St Enda's.

Mrs McAreavey, 27, the daughter of Tyrone Gaelic football boss Mickey Harte, was found strangled in her hotel room in Mauritius a week ago.

Her funeral was held on Monday at St Malachy's in Ballymacilroy, County Tyrone, the church in which she married John McAreavey on December 30.

It is understood that Mickey Harte and his wife Marian lived in Glengormley for a period around 30 years ago.

Chairman of St Enda's GAC, Michael Scott said: "The murder has stunned the club. We did not know Michaela, but two years ago, when we held our 50th anniversary celebrations, her father Mickey attended our formal dinner.

"He is such nice man, he was genuine in every thing he did and is absolutely devoted to his family.

"For that to happen is just such a tragedy."

He added: "I have three sons and a daughter - to think that one would die before you and in such an horrific manner on what was supposed to be a dream honeymoon, is unthinkable. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mickey and his family."
