MEDIA students at the Shore Road campus of the Northern Regional College (NRC) have launched their new in-house radio station, Soundwave Radio.
Cool FM DJ Pete Snodden and Jessica Hammond, who was a contestant on BBC talent show ‘The Voice’, helped launch the station which has been months in the planning.
Jenny McKay, Head of Student Services and Marketing welcomed the new radio station to the campus and praised the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production students who worked on its development.
She said: “At NRC we actively encourage our students to work on live projects which meet the needs of industry. This opportunity will give them the broadcasting experience they need to gain employment or entry into higher education.
“Soundwave Radio, which is located in the heart of the student social area, will be run by the students and for the students. I am in no doubt, that it will encourage more students to actively become involved and have their say, on student life.
“It’s also a great communication tool for them to keep up to date with student achievements across the college.”
Media students Scott Cormack, Stewart Clawson, Carrie Neal and Daniel McMurtry who were part of the project team who set up Soundwave Radio thanked Pete Snodden and Jessica Hammond for taking the time from their busy schedules to launch the station.
Scott said: “We welcome this incredible opportunity NRC has given us to run our own radio station, play our own music styles and interview people, who matter to us.
“Our plan is to broadcast over lunch time throughout the academic year and to keep students informed on events, news and student achievements and successes. Already we have a very exciting series of interviews lined up.
“The launch not only marks the beginning of a new student radio station, it also provides opportunities for the station to grow.
“The potential for Soundwave Radio is amazing and having Pete Snodden and Jessica Hammond here today is very exciting for everyone concerned.”
