Police have confirmed that a suspicious object, the discovery of which sparked a major security alert in Whiteabbey this morning, was “nothing untoward.”

Police received a report of a fire in the road at Glenville Road at around 4am on Tuesday, April 22.

Upon arrival, officers found a number of bins on fire and rubbish strewn around the area.

A suspicious object was identified amongst the rubbish and cordons were put in place and Army Technical Officers tasked to the scene.

“ATO attended and carried out a controlled explosion on the object which was later declared as nothing untoward. The cordons were removed and the road reopened at around 7.30am,” a PSNI spokesperson said.
