LOYALIST paramilitaries are thought to have been behind the brutal beating of a teenager in Monkstown last week.

The 19-year-old, from Greyabbey Gardens, was set upon by three masked men at around 8pm on Tuesday, January 4.

He was beaten with iron bars and both his hands were broken. The teenager was taken to hospital for treatment.

Councillor Billy Webb said he was 'shocked' at the attack.

"I had thought we had moved on and put this behind us.

"I totally condemn the attack and information about crime should be passed on to the PSNI and I wish the victim a speedy recovery," he said.

Police confirmed that they are investigating a number of lines of enquiry and have called for witnesses or anyone with further information to pass it on.

They can be contacted on 0845 600 8000 or information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
