The Northern Health Trust has announced proposals to close all of its residential care homes over the next five years.
The controversial plan means elderly people living in facilities like Clonmore House in Rathcoole now face an uncertain future.
“At present the Trust manages nine residential homes and we propose that no more long-term admissions are made to any of our homes.
“We would intend to close up to 50 per cent of our homes over the next three years and in the longer term stop providing statutory residential care entirely. Some private residential care will be available,” a Trust statement said.
Trade unions Unison and Unite have both condemned the move, with the latter branding it “privatising elderly health care”.
If the plan goes ahead, Clonmore House could shut sometime between 2014 and 2018.
