TRIBUTES have been paid to a former elected representative on Newtownabbey Borough Council who died on Monday, April 2.
The council’s Environment Committee were informed of the passing of former councillor Bill Johnston at a meeting on Monday night.
Mr Johnston, aged 83, entered the council as an Ulster Unionist and served the local community from 1997 to 2001, when ill health forced him to cut down on his workload.
He had been instrumental in setting up the University ward Policing Forum, and had been its Chair.
Members across the council chamber paid tribute to Mr Johnston, describing him as having been “a good colleague and friend” and “a hardworking and conscientious gentleman and councillor”.
Members also decided to hold a minute’s silence in honour and memory of Mr Johnston at their next meeting.
Sincere condolences were expressed to the family circle, particularly to Mr Johnston’s widow Gladys and his two sons, Brian and Robin.
Mr Johnston’s funeral is set to take place today, (Thursday, April 5) at 12 noon at the Church of the Holy Spirit on Manse Road with interment afterwards at 1.30pm at Carnmoney Parish Church.
