A LOCAL community worker has appealed for an end to sectarian violence along the pathway between Monkstown and Glenville following several nights of trouble in the area.
Over the past couple of years the interface between the two estates has become a hotspot for gangs of youths gathering to taunt each other, throw stones and get involved in fights.
Householders in the vicinity have had their property damaged on countless occasions, and during a spate of trouble last year as the violence escalated, a female police officer was hit with a brick and a youth stabbed in the back with a screwdriver.
Those shocking incidents sparked calls from some quarters for the Newtownabbey Way walking and cycling path between Monkstown and Whiteabbey to be closed off in a bid to keep the warring factions apart.
