Templepatrick CC skipper Ross Bryans excelled with bat and ball when he followed his seven wickets’ haul by hitting the winning runs against Belfast International Sports Club.
This Senior League Section 1 fixture was scheduled to be played at Mallusk Playing Fields, but was switched to The Cloughan where Bryans’ lads registered an emphatic win by six wickets.
Earlier in the season at the same venue the city side controversially knocked the locals out of the Junior Cup, when the Duckworth-Lewis calculation came to their rescue when facing almost certain defeat, so revenge was high on the agenda when the sides clashed in this league fixture.
BISC were skittled for only 93 in 29.1 overs, thanks to an excellent spell of bowling by Bryans who took 7 for 16 in 8.1 overs, while Phil Kernaghan, Michael Stewart and Rhys Wallace each claimed one scalp.
The hosts rattled off the runs in 29.4 overs, after losing their first wicket with only 13 on the scoreboard when Chris Busby departed for 2.
Paddy Lutton (19) and James Jackson (39) laid the foundation for victory when they advanced the score to 61 for 2. Jackson’s innings included 3 fours and one 6 off 61 balls, and when he and Artie Campbell (5) were dismissed the score was 82 for 4. So it was left to Kernaghan (4 not out) and Bryans (10 not out) to see TCC home. Bryans finished with a flourish with a pair of fours post 94 for 4.
Having lost their opening two fixtures against top sides Laurelvale and Cooke Collegians this was a welcome win, and the four points leave them in joint third spot that they share with no fewer than five other teams, some of whom have matches in hand.
Unfortunately, Drumaness have withdrawn from the league leaving only nine teams, with Millpark occupying the bottom spot, having lost all three games to date. At the opposite end Laurelvale and Cooke Collegians are first and second respectively, so with their only defeats to date being against the top two teams TCC’s prospects are encouraging, but they have no fixture next weekend. Next up is a home match against Millpark on June 4.
The 2nd XI’s Junior League Section 3 away fixture with Lurgan II was postponed.
Weekend fixture: 4th XV v Instonians V, away.
