Templepatrick ease to victory over league rivals Academy

Academy reserved their worst batting display of the season for Sunday’s visit to The Cloughan, where rivals Templepatrick triumphed by seven wickets.

When skipper Matthew Palmer won the toss he opted to take first knock, but his batsmen failed to respond and were bundled out for only 103. Mark Shields top-scored with 39, while Chris Halliday (27) was the only other to reach double figures. Mitchell Dickeson and Halliday had the best partnership of 22 for the fifth wicket.

The wickets were shared by six bowlers: Michael Stewart (2 for 2), Rhydian Davies (2 for 10), Robert Smith (2 for 30), Phil Kernaghan (2 for 37), James Jackson (1 for 3) and Ross Bryans (1 for 19).

Templepatrick’s captain, Smith, led the run-chase with 50. He had support from Bob Homani (23), while Artie Campbell (8 not-out) and Jackson (17 not-out) saw their side over the line at 104 for 3.

Academy’s successful bowlers were Mitch Atkins (2 for 24) and Chris Halliday (1 for 22).

“Our batsmen had a bad day on a lively wicket,” said Academy secretary Jack Quinn. “We kept losing wickets and couldn’t develop good partnerships, so we got nothing. But we are still in a sound mid-table position,” he added.

Adam Sloan’s 3rd XI booked their place in the semi-final of the Minor (Lindsay) Cup with a convincing win against Ballymena IV at Castle Grounds.

When the visiting skipper won the toss, he elected to bat and must have been reasonably pleased when they posted 181 for 9 in their 40 overs.

David McLarnon was Academy’s most successful bowler with three wickets, while Adrian Bryan and Michael Wilson took two each and Craig Jackson weighed in with one.

In reply, the hosts got off to a flying start with the scoreboard showing 42 for 2 in only seven overs, and they continued to score at over seven an over, to reach a match-winning 182 for five in only the 24th over.

Michael Wilson, batting at number three, led the run-fest with 84, while Peter Whitten ensured an early finish with a late, unbeaten 21.

Their semi-final opponents will be Muckamore III at Moylena on July 25.

Fixtures: 1st XI v Cliftonville, away; 3rd XI v Lisburn III, away; 4th XI v CIYMS IV, home.
