AFTER two defeats, 18th Newtownabbey Old Boys secured their first Division 1C point of the season with a 2-2 draw at Groomsport on Saturday.

Manager Garry Campbell told the Times: “We played by far the better football, only we’ve got into bad habits of conceding soft goals. But there are signs there of things coming together again. We’ve had our first cup win, now our first league point, and hopefully next week, our first league win.”

While Jackie Moore and Terry Lyness both had first-half opportunities, it was Groomsport who showed the way through a soft close range header five minutes from the break.

Things got worse after the break when Gary Craig, in his first start since his return to the fold, headed the ball past his own keeper Scott Hamilton.

Newtownabbey reduced the deficit 20 minutes from time when Paul Harper prodded the ball in from eight yards, in a goalmouth scramble.

Ricky Moore was moved up front in a bid to salvage a point and the home side gave them a helping hand when the referee’s brandished a second yellow to a Port player.

The Monkstown side made the extra man count when Jackie Moore got onto the end of a deep cross from Lee Garrett just before the end.

18th Newtownabbey OB: Hamilton – J Harper, Craig, Hunter – Ricky Moore, Torrens, Rea (Galloway), P Harper (Garrett), Shaw – Lyness, J Moore.

Next fixture: Newington Rangers (away). Saturday, September 21.
