Amateur League preview: Mossley FC

With the new Amateur League season set to get under way this weekend, takes a look at each of our local teams ahead of Saturday’s big kick-off. Today we focus on Mossley FC.

Having been pipped at the promotion post three years in a row, some key members of the squad Glen McIntyre was piecing together over the past few seasons have upped sticks and left for pastures new, mostly to the newly-formed Rathcoole YM.

With only one notable new signing, Glen will be depending on bringing players in from the Seconds to fill the void.

Opening fixtures: Saturday, Bangor Swifts (a); Tuesday, 1st Bangor OB (h)

Players in: Scott Cosgrove, S.

Players out: Jordan Armstrong, D, Rathcoole YM; Stuart Conlin, M, Nortel; Ronnie Stockard, D, Rathfern Rangers; Mark Kidd, M, Rathcoole YM; James Doyle, M, Rathcoole YM; Matt Doyle, D, Rathcoole YM.

Key player: Gary Orr.

Last season: 3rd in 1c; 52 points (26 games)

Prospects: For Mossley it has been a case of so near and yet so far, third the last two seasons and fourth the year before that (when three teams were promoted). Given the players who have left, a fourth promotion push is going to be difficult, although a lot depends on whether any more players join the exodus – or any of those who have left, start filtering back.
