Larne’s Scott Irvine, who suffered a serious head injury during an Irish Cup match after he collided with a perimeter wall, is set to make an imminent return to action.

On Monday the Greenisland man tweeted news that he has been given the all clear to play again.

Irvine, who made a welcome return to club training in June, is expected to feature in a string of games for the club’s reserves over the next few weeks.

The former Barn United and Ballyclare Comrades player was seriously injured in January while playing against rivals Carrick Rangers at Inver Park. The match was abandoned after 28 minutes. He recieved pitchside treatment from Larne physio, Joe Crawford, as well as from two off-duty paramedics who were watching the match. They came forward to offer help immediately after the accident.

Larne manager Davy McAlinden says Irvine’s return will give the club a huge lift.

“He will play for the reserves over the next few weeks. Like any other player who has been out, he needs game time and that will come. It’s a massive boost for us,” he said.
