CITY of Belfast Golf Club, Mallusk qualified for the knockout stages of the Jimmy Bruen Shield on Sunday (May 1) for the first time in their history.

The team, captained by Paul Atkinson, finished tied for second place with a combined score of 356 in the regional qualifier held at Balmoral Golf Club in very difficult, windy conditions.

The Mallusk men will now play Shandon Park at Balmoral later this month in an attempt to make the next round of the prestigious competition.

Commenting on the team’s impressive performance, Club Captain Darran Long (pictured), said: “This is a great achievement for City of Belfast Golf Club on the back of disappointing defeats in the Ulster Cup and Ulster Fourball. Hopefully we can achieve a similar outcome in the Pierce Purcell qualifying at Greenisland Golf Club this Sunday (May 8).”

Meanwhile, Stephen Gardiner came out on top in Saturday’s April Monthly Medal at City of Belfast. His nett 62 (gross 69) was good enough to take the victory ahead of Stephen Steele (nett 65) and Conor McKee (nett 65).
