Doagh’s Michael Patton, along with Michael McAllister from Antrim, coxed the Northern Ireland squad which secured to victory in the recent Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship in Bantry, Co. Cork.
Competing on 38ft wooden long boats, the local mixed crew was tested in 10 events, including sailing, rowing, oars and sails.
They produced good results with a second in the sailing race and a third in navigation. Kathy Patton coxed the team to a fourth-place finish in the rowing discipline, which was enough to claim the overall win.
“For Northern Ireland to win in only our second contest was absolutely fantastic,” said Nicola Wallace from Ballyclare. “It was great to meet so many people from other traditions and countries.”
