They say three is the magic number and it has certainly proven to be the case with Monkstown Community School’s all-conquering netball team.

The fifth-form side recently won their third title and now have a real shot at making it all the way to the Northern Ireland final.

They lifted the Intermediate Cup at the recent North Eastern finals at the Antrim Forum, having previously won the minor and junior titles and reached the NI League Final.

On their way to this year’s trophy success, they recorded wins over Ballyclare High, Ballyclare Secondary and Downshire’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams before edging past Glengormley High 15 - 13 in a tense final.

The team took a healthy 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter of the showpiece match, but had to battle hard in the last quarter as the Glengormley girls mounted a strong comeback.

Megan Finney and Hayley Crawford made sure Monstown’s defence was organised and disciplined - often denying Glengormley’s shooters the opportunity of possession. Jessica Ruddy, Taylor Wright and Hannah Duddy worked tirelessly through the centre of the court to feed the ball to their shooters. Courtney McCord

and Courtney Reynolds - both playing in their first League Finals - had to manoeuvre their way round the tall Glengormley defence to get their

opportunities to shoot.

Lauren Rainey and Amy McBride did not take the court in the final, but they have proven to be enthusiastic and reliable squad members.

Monkstown await the results of other area finals to discover who they will face in the Northern Ireland semi-finals.
