Jordanstown’s Jay McCrum took the early lead in the opening round the Ulster Motocross championship at Desertmartin Motocross Park last weekend.
Following a poor start in race one, the 14-year-old battled his way through the pack on board his ‘Fona Cab’ KTM but could not quite catch the eventual winner, Stuart Simpson who pipped the local rider to the post with only half a second to spare.
In race two, McCrum led into turn one before a collision involving him and Simpson going into turn two. Following a bashing of handle bars going into the arena jumps, both riders collided resulting in the raced being red flagged.
The race was eventually restarted and Jay led from start to finish. With Simpson injured and out of the running, Jay made the chequered flag in race three to give him an overall victory for round one of the Premier Class.
“I was really lucky out there today,” said McCrum. “Between crashes and mechanical issues, I am delighted to have won the opening round.”
