Looking back... One thousand new homes to be built at Cloughfern

One thousand new homes were to be built in Rathfern, the East Antrim Times announced in July 1966.

The properties were to be constructed in an estate running from Cloughfern Corner along Doagh Road towards Monkstown.

Building work was to be carried out by contractor George Wimpey on behalf on the Northern Ireland Housing Trust.

The development was expected to take several years to complete.

It was to include open spaces, parking spaces and a new school.

Street names including Ardranny, Knockenagh, Lacken, Renagh and Tulleevin had been approved by Newtownabbey Urban Council.

The Queens Park and Bawnmore estates were also to be extended.
