Representatives ask for New Mossley school to be built

The five man deputation from Newtownabbey Borough Council were wanting to put the case forward for a new five form secondary school in New Mossley.

Alderman Jim Smith, Councillors Leslie Caul, Jim Rooney, Bob Kidd and David Neill said it was the latest development in a long-running disagreement with NEELB over post-primary education proposals in the area.

The board and the council clashed when the board decided to extend Monkstown Community School, Ballyclare High and Glengormley High against the council’s recommendation that a secondary school be built in New Mossley. As part of the council’s plan they had also wanted Ballyclare High and Ballyclare Secondary to be extended.

Alderman Smith said: “This is an issue on which I feel very strongly about because there is ground in New Mossley which is earmarked for the school. Without such a school, the people of New Mossley will be under provided for. When we meet the Minister we will be arguing from both an educational and social standpoint.”
