Academy’s second XV ran out 22-21 winners over their Limavady counterparts in a Junior Section 4 top-of-the-table clash last Saturday.
Limavady drew first blood when their hooker got on the end of a sweeping move to land the opening score which was not converted.
In the 35 minute with Academy disputing penalty award, quick thinking allowed the visitors’ scrum-half to take a quick tap-penalty and ran in unchallenged from the 22 for a converted try to take a 12-0 lead.
Academy hit back in the 39th minute when captain Keith Dobbin got on the end of a flowing play to power in under the posts and with fellow back row Cathal Davis converting to reduce the deficit.
In the 43rd minute, tight-head prop Declan Coghlan crashed over for an unconverted try to level matters.
The visitors edged in front thanks to an early second-half penalty but Davis restored parity with a penalty of his own.
Two penalties in quick succession saw men from the north-west take a 21-15 lead before Coghlan crashed over with a late try. Davis’ crucial conversion secured a superb win for the Mallusk-based club.
