There was a share of the spoils as Ballyclare Secondary 1st XV and Ballyclare High III played out a 14-14 draw in Wednesday’s Ulster Schools’ Plate final.
With a last kick of the game Sam Caldwell kept his nerve and slotted over a penalty to level the match. Rules state the Plate must be shared in the event of a tie.
Ballyclare High School’s Director of Rugby, Mike McKeever, told the Times: “It was excellent for the town to have the two schools in the final of a competition. I encouraged a joint team photo, which was done brilliantly.
“Well done to Aaron Hall (Ballyclare Secondary) in leading his team and I wish them all the best in the future wherever they go to play rugby and whatever level. Keep playing the game, it’s the best sport in the world.
“And congratulations to our captain, Bruce Deyermond, and coaches Mr Lenaghan and Mr Bell on a fantastic, exciting and busy season with the 3rd XV.”
Mr. McKeever also revealed that, in conjunction with BRA and Ballymena Academy, Ballyclare High has agreed to run a mini development league for 3rd XV and 4th XV rugby.
It will be based on the three schools playing each other home and away next season to provide a more matches during September and October.
