Celebration of Peter

A YEAR after the tragic loss of legendary musician Peter Shortall, The Armagh Rhymers of which he was a founding member, is to hold a celebration of his life.

The Rhymers and the Shortall family have organised a day of music, story-telling and entertainment to celebrate Peter’s Life.

Peter died last year, aged just 65, after a short illness. Born in England and having lived in Lisburn, Peter settled in the Craigavon area in the early 70s and was well known through the area for his music and craic.

He was a talented artist, playing music, performing everything Irish, poetry, carving and even mask making.

He was a founding member of the Armagh Rhymers and travelled throughout the country playing his guitar, banjo and bodhran continuing the mumming traditiion, acting, singing, reciting poetry and teaching.

And while he was recognised for his work and even awarded an honorary citizenship of two US cities, it is his family and friends here who have missed him most.

As a tribute to him there will be an afternoon of music and craic at The Millennium Court Arts Centre on April 7 from 2pm to 6pm. And at Drumgor Bar in Craigavon there will be a music session. Of course, all musicians are welcome.
