Hazelwood College celebrates success

A special milestone in the history of Hazelwood Integrated College was marked at its annual awards evening.

The event not only marked high achievement, but also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Whitewell Road college.

The presentation evening was hosted by the Assistant Principals Mr Brennan and Mrs Drennan in the Assembly Hall at Ulster University’s Jordanstown campus.

A number of special guests were in attendance including Lady Elizabeth Bloomfield MBE, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg and Trevor Lunn MLA.

The guest speaker for the evening was the Chairman of the Hazelwood College Board of Governors, Mr Trevor Parkhill MBE.

Hazelwood celebrated excellent GSCE results this year, with 80 per cent of pupils achieving five or more A* - C grades, with an increase of two per cent in those achieving five GCSEs A* - C including English and Maths.

Principal Kathleen O’Hare recognised the determination of Hazelwood’s students and the outstanding teaching and learning environment created by all members of the college staff.

Lady Elizabeth Bloomfield MBE awarded the Lady Bloomfield Cup for Outstanding Achievement to Emma Rose Collins. The Niblock Cup for best GCSE results was presented to Claudia Airey and the Morrow Cup for best A Level results went to Jack White. Mrs O’Hare presented the Principal’s Award to long-serving teacher Mrs Frances Shannon, who departed the college in August.

The evening, which was a true celebration of achievement in Hazelwood Integrated College in the past academic year and indeed throughout the last 30 years, was rounded off with a strawberries and cream reception.
