From now on until late November, autumn feeds, high in phosphates, should be used to encourage strong roots. Also, potash promotes winter hardiness, but does not produce lush growth which could be damaged by frost.

Autumn lawn food thickens the lawn, inhibiting moss or weeds and at the same time improving the colour of the grass.

We stock two brands: Westland Aftercut All in One, which feeds the lawn and kills the moss, and Scotts Lawn Builder which just feeds the lawn. Scotts lawn builder can be used from now until mid-March. This is a slow-release lawn food and does not encourage fast growth.

If drainage is a problem in the lawn this can be improved by spiking with a digging fork, or use a lawn spiker. A hollow tyne can also been used to remove cores of soil which can then be filled with a 50/50 mix of horticultural grit and sterilised screened top soil.

Improving drainage in the lawn curtails the growth of moss.
