Pupils ‘Ditch the Dark’

As part of the recent ‘Ditch The Dark’ day the children not only dressed themselves in bright clothes but they also creatively decorated their bikes and scooters in bright and high visible colour to ensure they could be clearly seen by motorists.

Emma Keenan, the Sustrans Active Travel Officer for Causeway Coast and the Glens, organised the event in Gaelscoil an Chaistil as part of her two year work plans with the school to encourage safe, active and environmentally friendly travel.

“Encouraging children to walk and cycle to school is a brilliant way to promote an active lifestyle. The whole school showed great enthusiasm on the Ditch The Dark day.

“The children were resplendent in their bright colours, and the bicycle and scooter decorations were outstanding,” explained Emma.

Gaelscoil an Chaistil principal, Brídín Ní Dhonnghaile, added: “The partnership with Sustrans has got all of our children very excited about making a better effort to be more active when travelling to and from school. “Emma organised a very informative and fun workshop with the children on road safety and active travel.

“The children and parents are to be congratulated for the tremendous effort they made to make the Ditch The Dark day such a fun filled successful event.”
