In Belfast 78 people were arrested over the same period. Sixty-two of these were later charged including three with the attempted murder of a police officer.

No information was provided on convictions. The Minister advised it would likely be some time before all such cases have completed due criminal process.

He stated: "I can advise that, as at 14 September, a total of 78 persons have been arrested in relation to disturbances across Belfast. 62 of those have been charged with various offences including 3 with the attempted murder of a police officer.

"In Londonderry, 37 individuals were arrested for interface violence, during July and August; of those arrested, 5 were subsequently charged and 32 reported to the PPS."

He released the information in response to a written question at the Stormont Assembly tabled by DUP MLA Lord Morrow.
