Brrrrrrave swimmers strip off

BRRRRRAVE swimmers donned their bikini's and shorts on New Year's Day to take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean - all in the name of charity!

Despite the ice, snow and freezing weather conditions, Claire Kenna from Cloughmills and 10 of her friends decided to raise funds for Cancer Research by jumping into the sea at Whiterocks, Portrush.

Speaking to the Times, Claire, who organised the event, explained: “It all started out as a bit of fun with a few of us. However the swim soon escalated amongst my friends who thought it was a great way to raise money for charity and would be a laugh on New Year’s Day.

“The weather wasn’t the ideal conditions for a dip in the ocean however everyone was up for the challenge and travelled from Carrick and Clough to be there.

“The coldest part of the whole thing was the standing around for 20 minutes waiting for everyone to arrive, not good in a bikini. But once they did it was straight into the sea and out again as soon as possible.”

Hoping the swim will become an annual event, Claire continued: “This was the first year, but hopefully it will become a yearly thing and attract more people who want to raise money for charity.

“I chose Cancer Research this year as I know the Chairperson of the charity and I feel it’s a very worthwhile cause. So far we have raised 400, however money is still coming in.

“Some of us ended up with colds after the swim, mine lasted for a week and a half, however no one seemed to mind - and everyone’s said they’re up for it again next year!”
