Can you lend an arm?

DO you enjoy walking and have some free time to help others? Then the Lisburn in Focus project needs you.

Between May and August, the Sensory Support team in Lisburn run a fortnightly walking group for blind and partially sighted people. The group walk for around an hour and a half, usually on the Lagan towpath or in the park.

Some of the walkers prefer to take a sighted guide’s arm, as this enables them to walk more quickly, and therefore increases the health benefits of walking. Others just prefer a sighted guide to walk beside, to point out things of interest and to chat with.

To be a good sighted guide you need to be sociable, take pleasure in walking and have some free mornings over the summer. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, please contact the Lisburn in Focus team on 028 9260 0388 or email [email protected]. The group offers full training in how to guide someone and will support you as you get started.
