Cash boost for Caw Luncheon Club

FOLLOWING an appeal in The Sentinel earlier this month, a kind-hearted shop owner has stepped forward with a cash boost to help Caw Luncheon Club stay open for a few more weeks.

Big-hearted Jason Doherty, the owner of the Nisa shop at Caw, on Monday presented the Luncheon Club with a cheque for £400 to help defray the costs of providing nutritious dinners three days a week.

Head cook, Lorraine McCready, who started the luncheon club with just eight members many years ago, said she was delighted to receive the donation.

“This money will help save the luncheon club in the short term and we are very grateful to Jason for his generosity. We are still looking for a sponsor to help us keep this lifeline operating for the elderly in the Caw and Nelson Drive area. The older generation suffer from high instances of isolation and with a reduced income making it more difficult to make ends meet.

“The club is also a great way to bring other groups together and the older people love it. Whatever happens we are going to try and keep the luncheon club going,” she said.

Commenting on the donation, Jason said it was a pleasure to be able to help.

“Every month we have a promotion through which each time a customer buys that product money gets donated to our charity fund. This builds up over time and we can take it and pass it on.

“It is good to be able to give this money to an organisation in the community because it is the community which supports us, so in turn we are helping the community,” he said, adding: “It is good to see so many of the older people here being supported by the Luncheon Club. A lot of them would be our customers so it is good to be able to give something back, and it is a particular pleasure to be able to provide local support to a group catering to elderly people.”
