Coulter welcomes action on sunbeds

COUNCILLOR Jennifer Coulter has welcomed new legislation to regulate the use of sunbeds by under 18s as ‘long overdue’.

The Sunbeds Act prohibits the use of sunbeds to persons under 18, as well as placing a duty on the operator of the sunbed premises to provide customers with information on the risks associated with sunbed use.

Ms Coulter said: “This legislation is long overdue. Skin cancer is, in many cases, a preventable cancer if people are educated in the risks which sun damage can cause.

“This act goes some way to assist with increasing awareness. I do, however, fully support the council’s actions in taking the time to inform businesses that the legislation is now in place, and planning more stringent punishments for premises who continue to allow children to use sunbeds. These measures will, undoubtedly, help to save lives.”
