Condemnation after republican slogans painted in Glengormley

A utility box in the Glebecoole Park area was painted green, white and orange before ‘IRA’ was daubed on it over the weekend.

And republican slogans including ‘End British Rule’ and ‘Free the IRA POWs’ appeared on a wall in the Tramways Centre in the Farmley area.

North Belfast DUP MLA Phillip Brett hit out at those behind the vandalism.

He said: “I have had this disgraceful graffiti that appeared overnight in a quiet, residential area of Glengormley removed. This type of nonsense is not wanted by anyone in our town.

"The PSNI have launched an investigation.”

Police received reports following the criminal damage in Glengormley over the weekend.

Sergeant Neill said: “We received a report on Saturday, April 1 that sometime between 7pm on Friday, March 31 and 8am on April 1, sectarian graffiti had been sprayed on an electricity box in the Glebecoole Park area.“Officers attended and the graffiti has since been removed.“I would appeal to anyone who may have seen anyone suspicious in either of these areas or who may have CCTV or doorbell footage, to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 447 01/04/23.”

A PSNI confirmed that no reports had been received in regards to the graffiti at the Tramways Centre/Farmley.

A spokesperson for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council said: “The council is aware of a recent spate of graffiti in Glengormley and has had it removed.”
