Driver who drank crashed into school gates

A man who crashed into the gates at a Portstewart school has appeared in court where he was banned from the road for drink driving.

Kieran McAleese (52), of The Diamond, Portstewart, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court last Monday and pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

A prosecutor said at 1.50am on January 30 this year police were called after a vehicle appeared to have hit the gates of the school.

The defendant was arrested and had an alcohol/breath reading of 92, with the legal limit being 35.

A defence lawyer said his client had been attending a party in a friend’s house and after consuming alcohol made the “foolish decision” to drive home and he is now embarrassed by his actions.

District Judge Liam McNally said it was a “very high reading” but noted there was a clear record and a plea of guilty as he banned the defendant from driving for 16 months and fined him £300.

Anna Olivia Browne (44), of Apollo Avenue, is accused of committing the offence at Hopefield Crescent, Portrush, on November 22 last year. She appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court and was released on her own bail of £250.

The case was adjourned for a week.
