Electricity meter was by-passed

When he moved into a new house a 42 year old man discovered his electricity meter was by-passed, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Wednesday.

Anwar Amin, Clanrolla Park, Craigavon, was fined £150 for dishonestly using electricity on May 8 this year.

He was also ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard police and NIE officials went to the defendant’s house and discovered the meter had been tampered with.

Amin admitted that electricity was being used but denied installing the by-pass.

A barrister for the defendant said her client had recently moved into this rented property.

She added that he realised the electricity was free and what he did after that was dishonest. He took advantage of the situation.

The barrister said he found himself in a poor financial situation.
