Dallat resigns from Council

ONE of the longest serving members of Coleraine Borough Council has resigned after 33 years.

John Dallat who was first elected in 1977 has been the only Nationalist mayor ever to serve in Coleraine.

His resignation has been made possible by recent legislation passed at Westminster which allows for co-option of a replacement candidate rather than risk a by-election which his party could not have won.

Mr Dallat will tell Tuesday's meeting of the council that he is following SDLP policy which is to end dual mandates and allow him to devote more of his time to his work as an assembly member and deputy speaker.

He said: "Over the years I have experienced good times and bad times but my memories of those I have served with will always be positive.

"I want to pay particular tribute to my remaining council colleagues Gerry McLaughlin and Maura Hickey who are two of the most trusted people I have ever met.

"I will miss them as I will many other councillors from the other side of the floor so to speak who are also my friends.

"I will particularly miss the staff and workers in all departments because I regard them as the best in the world, totally committed to doing their best and always fair and reasonable in all the dealings I had with them.

"I will, of course, remain in close contact with the council and officers.

"I will give it every support and backing in the assembly to make possible its plans for new investment, new jobs and a better environment for everyone."

Mr Dallat added: "I was recently appointed to the European Union Committee of the Regions and intend to play a full part specialising in education.

"I am also fully involved in the Assembly's International Committee which is focussing on the Third World and, of course, I have my duties as Deputy Speaker of the Assembly as well as SDLP Spokesperson on the Environment.

"I am sad leaving but I am comforted by the fact that I will be replaced by one of the most energetic and capable workers in the party.

"Roisin Loftus has worked with me for ten years and is highly skilled in all aspects of constituency work, particularly the benefits system, planning, community care and the health service.

"I wish her well and know that she will serve all the people of the Coleraine Borough exceptionally well and will represent the SDLP with confidence when the council elections come round next year."
